ABOUT
I was born in Milwaukee to an Italian mother and Polish father; their ethnicities are important because they helped shape my interest in nonverbal communication and provide me with an awareness of the connection between behavior and outcomes; research foci of mine for most of my adult life.
My undergraduate years were spent at a small liberal arts college. I always enjoyed the academic, social and athletic aspects of school. My advanced education began with a masters degree in psychology at Marquette in Milwaukee.

I had to stay in the city to help care for my younger brothers and sister while my mother was treated for breast cancer. Before I traveled to a Big-Ten school for my doctoral training where I was also introduced to big time football, I married my college sweetheart, Kaaren.
My internship in clinical psychology took place at Duke University Medical Center. It was my first extended stay in the south and I marveled, as I still do now, that plants began to show themselves in late January. I have stayed in the south where I took my first and only position at the department of psychology at Emory University.
My son was born at Emory hospital and he, his wife Jenny and my two grandchildren live nearby in Savannah. I retired from Emory University in 2011, but have continued to teach in the Goizueta Business school and to research determinants of relationship success. I enjoy golf, tennis, and hiking and traveling at present.
